It’s winter and that means winter sports!

Yesterday I couldn’t resist this shot of the rink near our house, it had just been flooded.

We gave it a whirl last night, aside from a lot of sand on the surface, the ice is in good shape.

This is cool. I’ve never had a chance to skate on a real pond before.

If there’s a lot of sand on the surface, the ice is not in good shape. If they just flooded it, it means there’s only one, thin layer of ice there. It needs more layers (i.e. time and work) to make a thick-enough, solid surface. They do it in thin layers to make the ice hard and without air bubbles. Skating on it when it’s not done yet just ruins it.

To clarify, the ice is not full of sand itself – embedded, but covered in sand because the kids kept throwing sand-laden snowballs on the ice. With the recent snowfall, this should no longer be a problem. I stand by my assessment, the ice is in good shape.
