The face of downtown Helsinki is changing

March 22, 2013

A few weeks ago I was in downtown Helsinki, a rare occasion. As I hopped on the train to go home I was taken aback by the size of some of the buildings being built immediately west of the tracks at the main train station. Apparently new shopping centres will adorn this area, all but closing commuters in. I always enjoyed rolling in to the Helsinki train station because you could see the National Museum and the Parliament Building from the platforms, now we’ll be looking at walls and being encouraged to shop and consume… It feels like the world got a lot smaller in that part of Helsinki. Just sayin’.
