Head in the clouds

October 29, 2011

Do you watch the skies? Does the weather intrigue you?

Well it intrigues me. In the past I have probably told you that I have kept a weather log since 2001-2002. Some years are so stuffed with weather stories that I have had to bind the weather logs closed with a rubber band so the stuff doesn’t fall out.

In any case, the fall is upon us, the heat is beginning to dissipate off the land, rain is coming more regularly and the nights are colder. It is also getting darker. (All downhill from here until after Christmas – the dark season will soon be upon us… Booooo!) But when August comes, so do the clouds, in all shapes and sizes – some with rain, some without. August and September are by far the best cloud watching months in Finland. It is a good time to always have your camera in hand because you never know what kind of clouds will be around you from one day to the next.

There is a really neat cloud guide at the Cloud Appreciation Society.

I would say its contents are very applicable to Finland. Enjoy and learn.

In the meantime, here’s some of the cloud formations that have made their way across the skies of Espoo lately. (The last two pictures are from 2007 in Vehmersalmi.)

The best clouds are the kind that look like they’ve been glued on.
