Vierumäki’s newest golf course has a Canadian connection

October 25, 2006

A fun Finnish-Canadian connection… too tempting to pass up – even if golf season is coming to a close.

Graham Cooke designed the course at Vierumäki that bears his name. The Cooke course is the most recent addition to the scads of activities that one can take part in at Vierumäki. It was opened on June 17, 2006. In addition there is the Classic course, which was designed by Swede Jan Sederholm and the 3-par Coach course. Ironically, Graham Cooke was also the lead architect on the Huron Pines Golf and Country Club – just a short hop, skip and jump from where I grew up in Ontario… He has also designed courses in the U.S. and Italy. See more of Mr. Cooke’s work on his web pages at http://pages.total.net/~gcooke/

Vierumäki, just north of Lahti, is also home to Finnish Olympic Committee activities, the national men’s hockey team and was also the venue for the European Curling Championships back in 2001.
