The Nobel Peace Prize horse race is on

October 12, 2006
The horse race is on… The 2006 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday in Oslo and formally awarded on December 10.
Several names have come up, but what perks interest in Finland is that former Finnish President, Martti Ahtisaari is the odds on favourite at this point. Mr. Ahtisaari is known for his efforts overseeing Namibian independence in 1989-1990 for the UN, helping broker a peace deal between the Indonesian government and the separatists in Aceh and most recently as a special UN envoy dealing with the future status of Kosovo.
Mr. Ahtisaari himself favours Hungarian billionaire George Soros who has vested a lot of his money and time in promoting peace and democracy in Eastern Europe.
For more background (and better commentary) see the following links:

After the prize is awarded on Friday (that’s tomorrow!), I am sure the media outlets will start the associated circus. Stay tuned for more reaction from this venue. Personally I would like to see Mr. Ahtisaari win it, though he is not thoroughly recognized in Finland for his efforts over the years, it would give him the credit he most certainly deserves at this point in his career.
