Finns are waking up – spring is on the way

March 13, 2006
When the weather starts getting nice – LOOK OUT!

They’re everywhere!

A celebrated habit of almost every Finn at this time of the year is flocking outside in droves to enjoy the sunny weather. Yesterday was no exception: hundreds of thousands of people took to the outdoors in all forms… on skates, on snowmobiles, in their walking boots, in their ice fishing outfits, on skis with paragliders, on skis…

That is what the Mr. and I did yesterday. Anyone who is a regular reader knows I really like skiing. I am by no means good at it, but I sure enjoy it!  We embarked on a trip out on the sea ice that took us out into Espoo’s Suvisaaristo (saaristo is archipelago in English)… No worries – this ice is some 60cm thick. Three hours later with some 12 km under our belts, we had had a good trip! The Mr. used his phone to take some pictures while we were out on the ice… (This is phone technology in action too.  Click to enlarge the pictures – you might be able to see the paraskiers)

It was 16 celsius in Toronto on the weekend – I saw short sleeves and shorts.  A fabulous day and today, snow again and very very windy.  There was snow in Los Angeles over the weekend… go figure.
