The “blah” season begins

November 4, 2005
I really hate this time of the year in Finland! There is no simpler way to describe my loathing for this dark time of the year…
Last weekend we changed our clocks here in Finland. While it means that we have a little more morning daylight (as the days get progressively shorter), it also means that the sun goes down earlier.
It is 1:30 p.m. (Finnish time) as I write this and it is so bloody dark outside here in Espoo that the street lights are on already! Mind you it is cloudy and raining outside – but JEEZ…
For any poor foreigner who is experiencing their first fall in Finland, my sympathies go out to you if you find it tough. This time of the year is never easy for anyone who doesn’t deal well with the seasonal change. No matter how long you spend in Finland this time of the year never gets easier, sorry.
I can only offer the following tidbits of advice:
  • Do things that make you happy – laugh a lot – it helps!
  • Resist the urge to gobble up all the candy and chocolate in sight
  • Say no to that last beer! (Alcohol doesn’t help during these darks times)
  • Resist the urge to stay in bed longer in the morning
  • And for goodness sake – get outside and get some exercise – it might be the only thing that keeps you sane until the snow flies!

Chin up, skiing season will be here soon!  And it all goes uphill after Christmas – the light does come back!

yes it’s oppressive – i like to supplement the blahs with good literature and good soap operas….. also a nice new bath & shower gel with a tropical scent is good, too
