Helsinki welcomes the world (in just a few days)

August 1, 2005
For you non-sports fans out there, you may not know that Helsinki is the host of this year’s World Athletics Championships. For you North Americans out there that would be the World Track and Field Championships (which I can tell sounds more familiar to me). The home page is here: http://www.iaaf.org/WCH05/index.html

It’s been a real disappointment to read that many of the defending World and Olympics champions is a whole pile of events (mostly running events) will not be here to defend their titles. They include:
  • middle distance runner Kelly Holmes
  • Asafa Powell (currently the "World’s fastest man)
  • hurdler Jana Pittman
  • middle distance runner Hicham El Guerrouj
In spite of that I think we will see a great show anyways.

I’ve got my eye on only a couple of athletes because I know them by name – Canadian hurdler Perdita Felicien, Canadian high jumper Mark Boswell and Swede sensation Carolina Kluft. Of course I will also have my eye on the Finns too because there are some out there who are ready to show the world what they have – and they are javelin thrower Tero Pitkämäki and hammer thrower O-P Karjalainen. BBC Sport has a small collection of their top picks: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/4725327.stm

Pitkämäki is of special interest at this moment because he really has been chucking the javelin pretty far over the last few weeks. And in a sport where the best throwers are generally in their late 20’s and early 30’s, Pitkämäki is raising some eyebrows because he is only 22 years old. While on the same hand Olympic champion, Norwegian Andreas Thorkildsen is only 23 years old. The press have basically been salivating over Pitkämäki’s achievements of late – here’s a few samples: http://www.iaaf.org/WCH05/news/Kind=2/newsId=30778.html and http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/english/article/1101980431013

My other half and I are very fortunate (and really broke now too) because we managed to snag tickets for next Sunday’s events on August 7. I am looking forward to it, it’s another first time experience for me.
