Public phones to be phased out

April 19, 2005

If you ever plan to travel to Finland and need access to a phone while you’re here, I can suggest two things:

  • Bring your own GSM cell phone, or
  • Make sure you have friends or relatives that have a phone if you need to make a phone call.

The Finnish Broadcasting Corporation (FBC or YLE in Finnish) reported today that TeliaSonera will phase out public access phones by the end of 2005. One of Finland’s other service providers, Elisa, will phase out public phones by the end of the decade.

That means no more phone booths!

Service to land line infrastructures will also be phased out. Telephone service providers cite the overwhelming popularity of cell phones as the reason for the changes.

The wireless revolution continues in Finland…
